Soulmates

This story, is about two very singular people. It’s not that they have a special kind of feature that makes them particularly extraordinaire. No, as it turns out, Rebeca and Tarik are soulmates. They complement each other in every way so perfectly, it’s uncanny, almost impossible to believe there are any other people that are so made for each other. They enjoy almost the same things, Rebeca works as a cook, and she loves it, Tarik likes to do the dishes — weird, right? But he does — ; he likes to read out loud and act the voices, she loves to listen to stories; she likes to walk in the park at night, he loves the cold and watching fireflies; he loves his job as a game designer, she likes to spend entire nights playing games.

Now, the thing is, Rebeca used to live in Mexico City, where she won a great reputation as a chef and was offered a job in a renowned hotel’s restaurant in Oxford. Tarik was born in Palestine, but due to the conflicts, his parents had to send him to Lyon to study and live, catching up with him years later — on Tarik’s account.

One day, Tarik was invited to a three-day convention at a hotel in Oxford. And three things happened that week: The first day, Tarik had dinner at the hotel’s restaurant; yes, the restaurant were Rebeca worked, but that day they didn’t meet each other. The next day, Rebeca and Tarik took the same bus; she was sitting on the back, listening to an audiobook with her headphones, and Tarik was on the front, admiring the road. And the third day, a Friday night, Rebeca attended the showcase of videogames that took place at the hotel after the conferences; they saw each other’s eyes in the distance, felt a shock of electricity and smiled.

That night, Tarik flew back to Lyon and, a year later, Rebeca went back to Mexico. They never saw each other, ever again.
